Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Rundle

April 11th 2010 04:58
While much of the attention of the racing world was on Randwick in Sydney yesterday, ‘Team Williams’ - currently comprising of the Williams Family and trainer Robert Hickmott - produced an exciting staying prospect in the 3 year old gelding Rundle. Even winning jockey Nick Hall is an integral part of Team Williams being the godson of Lloyd - and besides that one of the most talented jockeys in Australia.

Rundle is a bay son of Galileo out of the Canny Lad mare Ain’t Misbehavin’. The stable star Linton is also by Galileo.

Rundle was a $70,000 buy from Coolmore at the 2008 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale. Rundle hails from the famous ‘Leica’ family which include notable gallopers such as Redding (VRC Derby. Sire); Leica Smile (Australasian Oaks) and Nothin’ Leica Dane (VRC Victoria Derby. Sire) in recent generations - and extends back to the 1970’s with champions Leica Lover; Leica Show, and Leica Planet.

A family steeped in staying success. A stable renowned for astuteness. A winning combination this Saturday in the $100,000 Galilee Series Final over 2500 metres at Flemington. The runner-up Chartreux is a very promising young stayer and was easily defeated by Rundle who produced a devastating sprint at the end of 2500 metres.

The bulk of the field are mostly C grade stayers - and the speedfigures from Speedratings were only moderate - but this was the performance of a horse with potential to rise to far loftier heights.

It is expected that Rundle will either contest the VRC St Leger Stakes over 2800 metres, or the SA Derby over 2500 metres, as a final start before being spelled and prepared for a Spring campaign.
