Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Lee Freedman continued his outstanding run of success with his imported English stayers last Saturday with highly regarded Sound Of Nature easily winning the Listed CS Hayes Memorial Cup (1600m) at Morphettville - while in Melbourne at Caulfield he produced two more English stayers who both won on their Australian debut.

Above Average was the heavily supported winner of a 1600 metre handicap - while Savarain debuted over 2000 metres and easily accounted for his opposition with an impressive victory.

Savarain was trained by Luca Cumai in England and at his last start before leaving for Australia he won the 2008 Listed Noel Murless Stakes over 2816 metres at Newmarket - ridden that day by Frankie Dettori.

Not long after arriving at the Freedman stables Savarain put a hole in his tendon and required a slow process of recuperation - much of it involving dressage based exercise conducted by Laura Santry of Marine Park - before being ready to grace a racetrack again.

"I did have a query about starting him off over 2000m, but I felt the extended program done by Laura and with his stout English form, I felt it was a gamble worth taking." - Lee Freedman, as reported on Freedman.com.

"He could have won over 2400m today he is that naturally fit." - Dwayne Dunn.
