Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Rocket Man not set for Scenic Blast

July 7th 2009 06:07
The path for Scenic Blast to the ($US1 million bonus) riches of the Global Sprint Challenge became decidedly easier this week with the announcement that the rising star sprinter from Singapore, Rocket Man, has suffered a hairline condylar fracture to his offside cannon bone.

The injury was suffered while Rocket Man was cantering on the polytrack with jockey Robbie Fradd riding.

“Robbie knows the horse so well and thankfully he was on him this morning. He was out to do two rounds of light work, quickening up in the second lap, but Robbie just felt there was something wrong with him.”

“He didn't let him stride up and kept a tight hold of him before dismounting and leading him back. It's lucky we have found it now and it didn't happen during a race or a fast gallop. The result could have been a lot different.”

“He's still a young horse and the prognosis is good so far. We will just have to keep our fingers crossed and hope the operation is a success.”
- Patrick Shaw as reported by the Singapore Turf Club media department.

Rocket Man was unbeaten before his unlucky and courageous second to Sacred Kingdom in the Group One KrisFlyer International Sprint (1200m) on May the 17th. Takeover Target finished well back in the same race.

Trainer Patrick Shaw had been investigating quarantine protocols in Japan and was keen on sending his Australian bred star to Japan for the Group One Sprinters’ Stakes (1200m) at Nakayama on October the 4th. This race is part of the Global Sprint Challenge and a target race for Scenic Blast. A planned trip to Australia has also been put on delay for the time being.

Scenic Blast has now won two Group One features (races designated as part of the Global Sprint Challenge). The first in Australia (the Lightning Stakes) - and the second in England (the King’s Stand Stakes). He needs now to win one more race of the Global Sprint Challenge - in a third country - to win the bonus $US 1 million.

After three legs of the Global Sprint Challenge Scenic Blast was well clear of his rivals and the only horse in contention for the bonus. With double bonus points for any horse winning away from their home country a win in the Darley July Cup would place Scenic Blast on 50 points with an unassailable lead. Second placed US horse Cannonball has already returned home.

after 3 legs:

Scenic Blast 30 points
Cannonball 12 points
Art Connoisseur 10 points
JJ The Jet Plane 6 points
Fleeting Spirit 5 points
Typhoon Zed 5 points

The July Cup (Group One 1200m) at Newmarket this Saturday is the fourth leg of the GSC. Scenic Blast is expected to start a very short-priced favourite and if successful he will have won 3 of the 4 GSC races for 2009.

Once again this race will be run down a straight course. Scenic Blast does excel under these conditions. Perhaps his real test will come when he attempts to win in Japan (or later in Hong Kong) when running right-handed around a turn. But Scenic Blast was so unlucky in the Group One Oakleigh Plate that a turn should not hold any great negative - provided he draws a reasonable barrier. He does need to be saved early and travelling wide around a bend would be an unwanted test. Scenic Blast is the best sprinter in the world when racing down his preferred straight track. The only possible flaw in his quest could come when running right-handed around a turn in Asia.

“That was the hardest he has worked since we have been over here. You have got to hand it to the old horse (Takeover Target) he is going to prove the one to beat on Friday.”

“Scenic Blast is certainly is the flavour over here at the moment.  All I can say is that he is spot on for Friday.”

“I have decided to give him between three and four weeks in the paddock here in England, before we aim him for the Group 1 Sprinters Stakes at Nakayama in Japan on October 4. The conditions up here are ideal and the amount of travelling involved by trying to head back home will be too severe on him.”

“I will prepare him from Newmarket for Japan and then after that race make a decision on his preparation for Hong Kong.  There are three different options I need to consider post Japan.”
- trainer Danny Morton as told to perthracing.com.au.
