Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Scenic

Scenic, a son of Sadler’s Wells, was foaled in Ireland in 1986 and died in March 2005 at Durham Lodge in Western Australia. He would stand with the highest service fee in the state at $16,500 after transferring earlier from Victoria.

Scenic was brought to Australia in 1990 after completing his first season at stud in Ireland during the northern breeding season earlier in the year.

His importation was a fortuitous event for the Australian breeding industry as he was the first Group One winner for the mighty Sadler's Wells, and almost certainly one of his first sons to undertake stud duties.

Scenic arrived in Australia in the same ‘shuttle draft’ as Danehill in 1990. Scenic has been undervalued as a stallion until practically the very end of his career. The phenomenal success that Danehill had immediately on Australia cast a shadow of comparison over Scenic that was premature and ill-founded. It is true that Scenic was not as universally successful as the great Danehill - but Scenic’s legacy on Australia grew from small beginnings into great significance. Initially Scenic stood at Lindsay Park. Then Collingrove in New South Wales, before moving to Victoria. Shuttled now around the country, and not the globe. It was to be when Scenic found his way to Durham Lodge in West Australia in 1998 that his stock became more prominent through success.

One of my favourite sons of Scenic was the wonderful Scenic Peak. He produced scintillating speedfigures from his first visit to Melbourne and it was no surprise (recommended by Speedratings) when he smashed the 1600m record at Flemington when winning the Emirates Stakes in 1.33.49.

Scenic is currently Australia's leading stallion this season with his season earnings beyond $6 million. Much of this comes from the victory of Viewed in the Melbourne Cup, but no stallion has sired more stakes winners this season. And of course with the win of Scenic Blast he has sired the winners of both the shortest, and longest, Group One events in Australia.

Now four years after his death, his time at the top of the stallions table will be brief. But finally the accolades so well deserved are forthcoming.

Stallion earnings 2008-2009:

1 Scenic $5,722,344 (not including this weekend)
2 Redoute's Choice $5,313,903
3 Encosta de Lago $4,928,332
4 Danehill Dancer $3,367,254
5 Zabeel $3,290,294

Hey Leonard, as a diciple of the Hayes stable I have especially fond recollections of the mighty Blevic - though Danewin's jockey played some role in that Derby victory!

But the Hayes stable had 2 great 3 year olds that year in Blevic and St.Covet.
