Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Apology to Sea The Stars

October 16th 2009 04:58
If Sea The Stars had raced last year I would have written thousands of words about his brilliant exploits. Zarkava caught my imagination then and was the subject of several articles written. This year time commitments and some health problems have seen me reluctantly quiet on many subjects and topics that I would love to have covered.

I apologise to Sea The Stars for this - and set to right this now at the announcement of his retirement.

By European Champion Miler Cape Cross, out of the champion broodmare Urban Sea, Sea The Stars was bred to be a champion. His mother was herself a winner of the world’s most prestigious race, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, a feat he would emulate at his final racetrack appearance. Sea The Stars is also the half-brother to the Champion racehorse and sire, Galileo.

The promise of the pedigree was on this occasion spectacularly reproduced on the racetrack.

And it is very likely that the brilliance of the racetrack will be emulated when he stands at stud.
