Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Widden Stud: departure and arrival

January 28th 2009 11:55
Widden Stud this week lost General Nediym after he suffered a recurrence of a bout of colic he had recovered from last month. General Nediym covered 148 mares last Spring at a fee of $60,500 before his stud season was curtailed by the first bout of colic on the 3rd of December.

“He became uncomfortable again last night and despite the best veterinary efforts to save him there was nothing that could be done.” - Antony Thompson, Widden Stud.

General Nediym was a dual Group One winner of the VRC Newmarket Handicap and Lightning Stakes, General Nediym won 13 races and more than $2million in prizemoney.

Retired to stud in 1999, General Nediym was the Champion First Season Sire in 2002/2003, proving a consistent source of quality winners despite moving from Queensland, to Victoria, then back to New South Wales, before settling at Widden Stud in 2004.

With better quality books of mares General Nediym was a sire on the up, finishing the 2007/2008 season as the leading sire of individual two year-old winners (15) and two year-old stakes-winners (5).

“We always believed he would be a great asset for Widden and the increased opportunities we could provide would take him to another level as a sire and I think we are only just starting to see that with his oldest Widden bred progeny now three year-olds,.” Antony Thompson.

Sebring has been immediately retired from racing and will head to Widden Stud for the 2009 breeding season. It was always intended that he would begin his stud career at Widden in 2009 - the only change to plan is the early retirement and his omission from the Melbourne and Sydney Autumn Carnival.

“Sebring was having his final hit out on Tuesday morning prior to a barrier trial on Friday to ascertain his level of fitness, but worked below his normal standard with his rider reporting he was not happy with the horse.”

“Sebring was later examined by Jonathan Lumsden at Randwick  Equine Hospital, who diagnosed a re-occurring soundness issue requiring a minimum eight weeks spell. Given the timing of this minor setback and the fact a delayed preparation could impede on the start of his stud career in the spring, we have decided it is in the shareholders best interests for Sebring to be retired immediately.”
- Antony Thompson.

No stud fee has been set yet with an announcement to be made in April.

Sebring won the 2008 Golden Slipper and was crowned last season’s Champion Two Year Old. He won two legs of the Two-Year-Old Triple Crown - the Group One Golden Slipper and Group One Sires’ Produce Stakes - before narrowly succumbing to Samantha Miss in the Group One Champagne Stakes. He failed to return in the Spring as a three-year-old after the onset of leg problems. His conqueror Samantha Miss did take part in the Spring and cut a swathe through the best of her age in Sydney and Melbourne, before a meritorious third placing against the best in the land in the Cox Plate.

Sebring will be the fifth Golden Slipper winner to stand at Widden, following in the illustrious footsteps of Todman, Vain and Marscay – all champion sires in their own right - as well as the 2005 winner Stratum, whose oldest progeny are now impressive yearlings selling for up to $370,000 at sales this year.

“Sebring is the most sought after stallion prospect to emerge in a very long time and we are thrilled that his owners chose Widden as the farm to give their horse the best possible home and we now look forward to his arrival next week.” - Antony Thompson.

So, one Champion Sire departs far too early - and a Champion Two-Year-Old arrives far too soon. General Nediym was 14 years old and had been a wonderful sire of fast and honest horses. The last crop from General Nediym should be interesting to watch for sentimental reasons - and because of the quality of mares Widden had provided him.

I was initially relieved to learn that Sebring was to return to racing and had in his sights feature races against Australia’s best horses. I wanted to see him tested again - not retired after merely a two year old campaign.

Two year old racing is not satisfying enough. It is like watching junior players win a Junior Wimbledon or Junior Australian Open. Promising yes - but a long way to go before being revered. How do we know how resilient a horse may be? How brave? How endearing or how frustrating? At least with Curlin we have seen habitual displays of courage, soundness and resilience.

Injury is a valid reason for the retirement of any horse, a precocious stallion prospect or a journeyman old gelding. But there is a debate to be had in Australia, the US and Europe about the nature of our sport. We call it horse racing. The racing fan grows tired of early retirement for the riches of the breeding barn.
