Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Hong Kong Report: Alex Lai

Sunday 10/10/2010 was a memorable day for Hong Kong jockey Alex Lai. The race day at Sha Tin was billed as a celebration of Alex's win on Ultra Fantasy on 3rd of October in the Group 1 Sprinters Stakes at Nakayama Racecourse in Japan. Ultra Fantasy had been a long shot, with hot Hong Kong sprinter Green Birdie also lining up. In May of this year, Green Birdie had beaten the Singapore champion, Rocket Man in the Kris Flyer sprint, and so had better credentials; but it was Ultra Fantasy's turn in Nakayama, virtually leading all the way to take the prize.

A congratulatory ceremony took place in the Parade Ring for the owner, trainer and jockey. Every member of the crowd was treated to a free, colourful poster of Ultra Fantasy's Nakayama win.

Alex's day was topped off when he stormed home to just take the money in a close finish on General Command in the second race of the day.
