Noh Goes From Grit to Grin

Words and photographs by Neil Murray, reporting from Singapore for Thoroughbreds Worldwide and RacingWrite.
Apart from Vlad Duric, who won the Group 1 Singapore Guineas, no-one showed more delight with a win at Singapore's Kranji racecourse last Friday than nineteen year-old apprentice Noh Senari (S Noh). Noh, who claims 3 kg., rode the Irish-bred Danehill gelding Scmeichal to a convincing win in the Mr Line 2006 Handicap over 1600 metres. The jockey might have been young, but the horse, at eight, had a few years on all but one competitor in the field of sixteen. Noh got the best out of the veteran gelding, riding with flair and with finesse to score comfortably by almost two lengths.
This series of photos tracks Noh's changing expression as he works on Scmeichel going down the straight across the line and into the winners enclosure. Before this win, Noh had won 3 from his last 30 rides. After last Friday's card he has 4 from 34 - a respectable strike rate of just under 12%.
