Sir Michael Stoute has been very keen to venture to Australia with his impressive 3 year old colt Patkai for a tilt at the Melbourne Cup.

The son of Indian Ridge is the raging favourite for the Group Two Ladbrokes Great Voltigeur Stakes at York after his most impressive seven length victory in the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot. The first two days of the York meeting have been abandoned due to the waterlogged conditions of the track. It is highly possible that York will conduct a two-day meeting on the Thursday and Friday which will include the rescheduled feature races of the Great Voltigeur Stakes and the Group One International Stakes, a race which which would see the clash of Duke Of Marmalade and Derby winner New Approach. Another option is to add another day to the carnival and race on the Saturday.
Of immediate importance for Patkai and Sir Michael Stoute is the looming St Leger at Doncaster. Most of the eight horse field in the Great Voltigeur are on trial for the St Leger with only Centennial and Meydan City not being entered for the classic.
Aidan O’Brien (as usual) has a multi-pronged attack on the Great Voltigeur with Alessandro Volta, Bashkirov and Hindu Kush being his entries. This decade the Great Voltigeur has been a strong guide to the St Leger with Milan (2001), Rule Of Law (2004) and Lucarno (2007) going on to victory at Doncaster .
Patkai won the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot in emphatic style after being slowly away in the 2 mile Group Two event and steadily making ground until he claimed the lead inside the final 2 furlongs and spaced his rivals in an impressive staying performance. He ran 3 minutes 27.86 seconds on firm ground.
A (negative) feature of Patkai’s racing style that would not suit Australian conditions is his habit of dwelling at the start and being slowly away.
Patkai has won at distances ranging from 1 mile (a maiden) to 2 miles. He has raced 6 times for 3 wins, 1 second and 1 third.
