Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Wishful Thinking

So You Think
So You Think

The connections of So You Think have still not announced whether they will bring him to Melbourne for a tilt at a third Cox Plate, or stay in Europe to contest this year's Prix de l'Arc de triomphe.  I hope they plumb for the Arc. Much as it would be fantastic to see the great horse in Melbourne again, and even greater if he were to win three Cox Plates in a row, winning an Arc would put So You Think on an even higher pedestal .

An illustrious list of Australian jockeys have won the Arc since it's inception in 1920, including Frank Bullock and Bill Williamson who both won it twice. But to my knowledge, no Australian horse has won an Arc. The overseas bookies reckon So You Think is a great chance for this year's Arc, setting his odds around 4/1 as second favourite behind Pour Moi at 3/1.

Many of us were terribly disappointed when So You Think went to Britain; but now he's there it seems an awful shame not to have a crack at the very best horses in the very best races. That means a start in perhaps the most prestigious race of all - the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Editor's note:

To my knowledge only one horse, Strawberry Road, has represented Australia in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. He finished a very unlucky 5th (extreme pilot error) behind Sagace in the 1984 Arc.

Many of our greatest horses (think Kingston Town, etc.) have been geldings - ruling them out of the Arc, as only male entires are permitted to race. And naturally there has always been the difficulty and reluctance to travel to the northern hemisphere to compete.
