Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Racing news from Australia and the US

January 3rd 2011 01:18
This weekend in Melbourne jockey Darren Gauci continued with his current run of peaks and troughs, ebb and flow, when he ‘bookended’ 7 days of the highs and lows of racing with a well-deserved stakes win aboard Rentarossa in the Listed Bagot Handicap at Flemington (2800 metres). This elusive stakes victory hot on the heels of his 3rd placing - including a dramatic fall - the week earlier in the Christmas Stakes aboard Gold In Dubai.

Both these threads come together in two articles on Thoroughbreds Worldwide - with the coverage of his fall featured in ‘Australasia’, and the aftermath of his double-up win on Rentarossa part of a featured story on the main page (Featured Articles).

Also to be found is an article about US trainer Bob Baffert and his new crop of young stars - none more fascinating than Uncle Sam. The article also has a stunning photograph of Uncle Sam taken by Cheryl Ann Quigley - and links to further reading on Cryptorchidism in the horse.

Also this week Speedratings has introduced the highly informative ‘speed zone’ into its comprehensive Speedguide. Now clients can see in a flash which horses are ready to win - and which races should be best left alone. A brilliant new innovation in identifying thoroughbreds at their peak.
