Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Starspangledbanner

June 19th 2010 23:42
Australian sprinters quickly regained their position of prominence in England once again after the brilliant performance of sustained speed shown by Starspangledbanner in winning the Golden Jubilee Stakes (Group One - 6 furlongs), casting aside all sour memories of the failures of Nicconi and Gold Trail in the King’s Stand Stakes earlier this week.

Aidan O’Brien claims he has never trained a faster horse.

And we in Australia already know this after the flashy chestnut won the Oakleigh Plate (Group One - 1100 metres) and produced many dominant performances to win over 1000 metres. But holding him in good stead - and accentuating his true worth and ability - is his brilliant victory in the Group One Caulfield Guineas over 1600 metres.

A very expensive acquisition for Coolmore.

A very astute acquisition for Coolmore - made even more so by his final phase before stud racing in England under the care of Aidan O’Brien.

A fast horse with stamina. A handsome stallion who will throw some impressive yearlings.

Starspangledbanner will most likely head on to the July Cup now - and try to better his sire (and UK trailblazer) Choisir with a victory.

But regardless of the next result: mission accomplished.
