Steve Asmussen creates new training record
November 24th 2008 08:26
US trainer Steve Asmussen has set a new record of 557 (and still counting) winners trained in a year. Asmussen bettered the previous mark of 555 winners in a season - which Asmussen had also set in 2004 when he shattered the previous record of Jack Van Berg who trained 496 in 1976.

With opportunities for even more winners rapidly dwindling as the year draws to a close Asmussen believes that he could perhaps get near to 590, although 600 winners remained very doubtful.
To create such a record a trainer needs to have large numbers in a stable - and multiple entries across each raceday. On the Sunday when Asmussen broke his old record he had 11 horses entered at 5 different racetracks.
Asmussen has trained winners that rank from the mighty Curlin at Group One level, to lowly winners of claiming races. Asmussen trains over 200 horses and has stables at tracks all around the US including Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana and New York.
Steve Asmussen celebrated his 43rd birthday last week and 2008 has been for him a year to celebrate. Records are made to be broken - but given that Asmussen is this year 161 winners clear of the trainer in second position, Scott Lake, it would be brave (or foolhardy) to suggest that this record will be broken anytime soon (if ever). Asmussen does not believe that he will break his own record again - and if not Asmussen, then who possibly could?
Asmussen has been the champion US trainer for winners trained four out of the past six years. The past two years he has had none other than Curlin as his headline act. Curlin now heads the North American all-time leading money-winner list with career earnings of $10,501,800.
Curlin will stand at Lane’s End Stud in 2009 for a service fee of $75,000.
This year Curlin rewarded Asmussen with Grade (Group) One victories in the US in the Stephen Foster Handicap; Woodward Stakes; and Jockey Club Gold Cup. There were two more Group One victories for Curlin and Asmussen in Dubai including the Dubai World Cup - but these do not count towards his US trainer’s total.
“The Jacksons are due great credit for allowing our sport to enjoy this great champion as a four-year-old, Many would have retired him after winning the Breeders’ Cup Classic and Horse of the Year honors as a three-year-old. Curlin’s performance on the track, his pedigree, and his conformation make him the most exciting sire prospect to retire in many years. We are honored to have him join his champion sire Smart Strike at Lane’s End.” - Will Farish, Lane’s End Stud.
