Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Arnold Double

Jockey, Steven Arnold, took the riding honours at last Saturday's Flemington meeting with a winning double. Arnold had only three rides for the day to produce his two winners. Both were well in the betting.

Steven Arnold on Golden Penny leads third placegetter Legion's Belle at the 100 metre.

In the third race, the Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria Plate over 1400 metres, Steven rode the $3.80 chance, Golden Penny. Golden Penny is a 4yo bay mare by Blevic out of Miss Moula and is trained at Morphetville by Richard Jolly. Golden Penny had already proven herself capable of travelling to Melbourne to take on the locals having scored a win over Royal Bender at Moonee Valley in June 2011. This time, Steven got the mare to the front in the straight and held off the fast finishing Lady Rock to score by 1.5l.

First Command in front close to the finish. Second placegetter, Dericles ridden by Dwayne Dunn is nearest the camera. Third placegetter, Weekend Special, ridden by Michael Rodd is next to Decircles, partially hidden.

In the sixth race, the Kensington Stakes (Listed) over a 1000 metres down the Flemington straight, Steven rode the Anthony Freedman trained $4.80 favourite, First Command. First Command drew the outside barrier (11). At the jump, Steven headed for the outside fence on First Command along with Michael Walker on The Soldier, who had drawn barrier (10). But Steven soon thought better of it and quickly scooted back to join the rest of the field on the inside rail. The decision proved a good one. With 150 metres to go, First Command hit the lead with a wall of horses hot on the gelding's tail. Arnold held off Dericles and Weekend Special to hit the line with a margin of just 0.3l. Steven Arnold won this same race last year on Grand Duels. Grand Duels was entered for this year's race but was a late scratching when injured on the way to the track.
