Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Storm Burst

Champion trainer Peter Moody will often take one of his well performing horses - though one still failing to win on metropolitan racetracks - to a provincial meeting to allow the horse a win for confidence. A confidence boost for both horse and stable.

And this was the case with Storm Burst, a 2 year old bay filly by Danehill Dancer (IRE) out of Storm Fille, last Sunday at Cranbourne.

At her two previous racetrack appearances she was placed (on debut) when 3rd behind the colt Toorak Toff at Sandown Lakeside. Toorak Toff would subsequently gain black type with his Group 3 win in Adelaide in the Jansz Stakes (1200m) - before an unlucky 4th at his next start in the Group 1 Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Randwick. After a 19 week spell the filly Storm Burst would resume with a strong 2nd behind Cyndiana Star on a heavy track at Flemington in a 1000m race when the winner was allowed to dictate in front.

So, deserving of a win, Storm Burst was taken to the Sunday provincials. There she would race in a 1200m Maiden and start a short-priced favourite at $1.90. Storm Burst settled just off the speed and came away (with Linda Meech riding) to record an effortless 4.5 length win.

A well deserved win. A confidence boost. The best is yet to come.
