Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

The 2010 Vanity Handicap

June 17th 2010 07:05
Once again the remarkable Zenyatta rose to the occasion and charged home to record another win - her 17th in succession - when given the task of reeling in a brave St Trinians in the Grade 1 Vanity Handicap at Hollywood Park.

Zenyatta now has career earnings of $US6,074,580 and closes in on Ouija Boards' $US6,334,296 - the female record career earnings for a horse that has raced in North America.

Will Zenyatta ever race against Rachel Alexandra to unequivocally - and once and for all - prove her superiority? And has St Trinians now elevated herself into contention for being regarded as the second best mare in the US?

Since arriving from England the 5 year old mare St Trinians has been a revelation on synthetic tracks with 7 wins from 11 starts, rising from the lowly ranks of an Allowance race at Santa Anita, to victory in the Grade 11 Santa Maria Handicap at Santa Anita. And finally to thoroughly test the champion mare Zenyatta in the Vanity.
