Time Thief

The history of high-priced yearlings is not always flattering. The astronomical purchase price often not evident in racetrack performance - and you can only hope then for the pre potency of genes to step in to produce a (long term) success at stud.
Today at Moonee Valley one such high-priced yearling had a racetrack debut. And for him the signs are much more encouraging than they are worrying.
Time Thief, the $2 million purchase by Darley, recorded an impressive win on debut today at Moonee Valley today over 1000m. The Lee Freedman trained colt was tardy from the barriers but quickly raced into the field and moved up to control the race on turning. He is an impressive individual to look at and won this race with some ease.
Freedman has always considered him an exciting prospect but was unable to get him to the races any sooner than today.
He contracted a virus when being set for the Blue Diamond - then subsequently went shin-sore when being set for the Golden Slipper.
“The great thing about Darley is they give you the time and hopefully he can pay them back,” Freedman said.
Time Thief is being set for the Caulfield Guineas. This time last year another inexperienced (then untapped) 3 year old went from a maiden win to victory in the Caulfield Guineas in the space of a few runs. That horse was Weekend Hussler.
Time Thief is out of the the successful producing mare Procrastinate.
Time Thief is not the first high priced yearling from this mare. In 2006 her Danehill Dancer filly fetched $1.6 million. She was later named Patasi and was dual stakes placed before retiring to stud this season.
In 2005 her Galileo filly sold for $650,000 at the Easter Sale. That filly was later named Personify and became a Listed winner in South Australia. She was later herself put in foal to Redoute’s Choice and sold at this year’s Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale for $2 million.
Procrastinate is already the dam of Laisserfaire (by Danehill) the Champion Female Sprinter of South Africa in 2001 and 2002 and winner of 5 Group 1 races, and Foreplay (by Danehill) a Listed Race winner of the MRC Japan Racing Association Stakes at Caulfield and placed at Group 1 in the Newmarket Handicap behind Alinghi and Fastnet Rock before being retired to stud.
This is a successful family that proves very popular in the auction ring. Success from Time Thief will make it even more so.
