Timeform Top Twenty

Timeform has just released its list of the Global Top 20 racehorses (published August 6, 2008).

At number 1 is champion US horse Curlin. He is classified at a134. The prefix 'a' indicates that the best performances are on dirt or artificial tracks. It now appears that he will not have any further opportunity to remove the modification (of the prefix 'a') to his champion status. Curlin - a champion dirt horse.
At number 2 is Duke Of Marmalade at 133. He is regarded by Timeform as the best turf horse in the world. Is the best turf horse in the world headed for Melbourne or Paris? Oui?
Coming in at (equal) number 3 is Big Brown with a rating of a132. A controversial horse with a controversial ranking. Equal number 3 is Papal Bull, also 132, but he also has a modifying suffix of the Timeform 'Squiggle' (this looks more like two letters 's' linked vertically). It denotes a horse that is 'unreliable' for temperamental or 'other reasons'.
Equal fifth are: Henrythenavigator, New Approach and Sacred Kingdom - all on 131 (with no prefix or suffix). I still believe that Henrythenavigator is worthy of a higher ranking. New Approach is well classified on his Epsom Derby win. Sacred Kingdom from Hong Kong may be lucky to be rated equivalent to these two.
There are five horses rated equal 6th and all on a (clear) 130:
Raven's Pass
Soldier Of Fortune
Tartan Bearer
Weekend Hussler
Youmzain
The fortunes of these horses in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe can elevate some from this list (and some above) much higher - as will a Melbourne Spring dominated by Weekend Hussler.
Other rankings of interest include Montmartre at equal 15th on 128 (with a 'plus' sign to indicate that the horse may be better than rated). I'm sure Montmartre is better than fifteenth (equal) in the world!
Septimus - likely to head to Melbourne this Spring - is also 15th ranked.
Apache Cat, Miss Andretti and Yeats (with four others) are equal 18th ranked on 127.
Lists are always controversial. Open for debate and disagreement. Even Timeform lists.
