Tizway Wins His Way

On August 6th before a crowd of 34,412 at Saratoga the Tiznow colt Tizway proved he was more than a miler winning the mile and an eighth Grade I Whitney Invitational Handicap. The Whitney has long been a prominent race in the handicap division it was named for the Whitney family in honor of their long time support of horse racing. Horses owned by C. V. Whitney have won the race four times. The great Kelso won the Whitney three times during a five year span. The immortal Secretariat suffered one of his few losses in the Whitney losing to Onion who was trained by the “giant killer” Allen Jerkins.
Out of the turn Tizway (maroon hat) takes the lead, Flat Out on outside (shadow roll) got up for 2nd.
Tizway had previously earned a “win and you’re in” birth to the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile when winning the Metropolitan Mile, now his connections will have a choice as they have now also qualified for the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Tizway has not proved himself at the classic distance of 1 ¼ miles though, so he will most likely face that test in his next anticipated start in the Jockey Gold Cup Invitational on October 2nd at Belmont Park. Tizway stayed close to the pace before making his move at the 5/8 pole and won by 3 lengths making him one of the sports latest millionaires. On board for the win was Rajiv Maragh for trainer James Bond and owner William Clifton Jr. Second in the race was Flat Out ridden by Alex Solis and flying from last to get third was Giant Oak ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan.
With all four hooves in the air Tizway passes early leader Friends or Foe.
Also on the card this day was the Grade I Test Stakes for 3 yr. old fillies going 7 furlongs on the dirt track. Even a light rain during the race could not detour Turbulent Descent from the win. While given a hand ride by jockey David Flores she improved the filly’s win record to 6 for 8. Not only would David be my go to jockey if I owned a horse, he has a remarkable win percentage when going out town to ride key races while being a member of the southern California jockey colony. Turbulent Descentis out of the sire Congrats, her trainer Mike Puype has stated that the filly will train up to the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint while racing for the owner partnership of Blinkers On Racing Stable. Running second in the race was Pomeroys Pistol and Roman Treasure faded to third after sitting the early fractions.
Turbulent Descent before taking the lead down the stretch.
