Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

The Age Caulfield Guineas Prelude (Group 3) 1400 metres

1st Anacheeva - Luke Nolen - Peter Moody
2nd Toorak Toff - Damien Oliver - Rick Hore-Lacy
3rd Skilled - Mark Zahra - Peter Snowden
4th Intencion - Danny Nikolic - Tony Vasil

Before last Saturday's Caulfield Guineas Prelude, Toorak Toff's trainer, Rick Hore-Lacy, had some reservations about the Toff's chances (interviewed on radio 927). He felt that if there was a race during this campaign where the horse might be vulnerable, this would be the race. As it turned out, he was right.

Toorak Toff was beaten narrowly on the line by the in-form Anacheeva. Rather than reducing his odds for the upcoming $1 million Caulfield Guineas, the bookies were so impressed with the Toff's run that he firmed to $5 favourite.

Toorak Toff's performance in the Prelude was all the more commendable because he had no luck in running. After a good start he got caught three wide for much of the race. Even so he hit the front in the straight and looked the winner until caught by Anacheeva in the shadows of the post. Jockey, Damien Oliver, was happy with the horse's run and enthusiastic about riding Toorak Toff in the Guineas.
