Toorak Toff

The Vain Stakes (Listed - 1100 metres) at Caulfield last Saturday saw the return to racing by several high quality last-season two-year-olds having the first starts of their three year old campaigns.

The Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Star Witness, a striking chestnut son of Starcraft, was the major centre of interest and would start favourite.
Peter Moody produced his Streets Listed Stakes winner Master Harry who had been brilliant on debut in the Autumn, easily accounting for his impressive stablemate Curtana.
The other colt returning from an impressive Autumn was the Show A Heart colt Toorak Toff, a winner of the Group 3 Jansz Stakes at Morphettville, later campaigning in Sydney and being without luck when narrowly beaten in two Group 1 feature races (Sires’ Produce and Champagne Stakes).
Toorak Toff was the least fancied of this trio and would go around a $9.00 chance, his trainer Rick Hore-Lacy believing the 1100 metres of the Vain Stakes to be too short.
It was a masterful ride from Damien Oliver who would allow his colt to settle last, then follow Star Witness into the race before peeling off his heels to come down the centre of the track with a sweeping run to catch the Peter Snowden trained Soul who had race fitness to his benefit.
Rick Hore-Lacy trained the champion galloper (and now stallion) Redoute’s Choice and declares that Toorak Toff is potentially better than his illustrious stable predecessor.
The Vain Stakes result is not yet conclusive as to the long term potential of the quality field with the stables of both Star Witness (3rd) and Master Harry (8th) both believing that the slow track was the primary reason for their defeat.
Toorak Toff is now being aimed at the $1 million Golden Rose (Group 1 over 1400 metres at Rosehill) on Saturday week, before returning to Melbourne with the prospect of competing against the older horses at weight-for-age. However the primary target for Toorak Toff is the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas, a race won by his trainer Rick Hore-Lacy with Redoute’s Choice in 1999.

Toorak Toff (orange colours and winkers) begins to storm down the track. Immediately to his inside is Star Witness (blue and white). Runner-up Soul is in the maroon and white Darley colours and can be seen pushing through one horse from the rail.
