Victorian Thoroughbred Racing Awards
August 4th 2008 05:58
No real surprises at the Victorian Thoroughbred Racing Awards which were presented last Saturday night.
Craig Williams won his third consecutive Scobie Breasley Medal. He polled the maximum three votes at thirteen meetings this past season.

Craig Williams 73 votes
Sebastian Murphy 54 votes
Damian Oliver 44 Votes
But in contrast to Craig Williams winning the jockeys' award after being winning the jockeys' premiership, the winners of the trainers' premiership, David Hayes, was not in the top three in the Fred Hoysted Medal for most outstanding training performance.
This was won by Mark Kavanagh.
Mark Kavanagh 67 votes
Mick Price 58 votes
Ross McDonald 52 votes
Kavanagh dominated the Spring Carnival with the exploits of Devil Moon, Divine Madonna, and Maldivian.
Weekend Hussler was awarded Victorian Racehorse Of The Year. If not so then psychiatric examinations and evaluations would have been necessary for all those allocating votes.
Thankfully the mental capacity of those voting is intact.
Weekend Hussler 32 votes
Apache Cat 2 votes
Efficient 1 vote
He is seriously that good! It does appear skewed when Apache Cat was also able to string together a series of Group One victories - and Efficient is our top stakes-earner and winner of last year's Melbourne Cup. Both of these together could only gather 10% of the total votes given to Weekend Hussler. But somehow it also seems right.
In a more despondent note the Country Racehorse Of The Year was awarded to Diamonds At Dawn. No debate over worthiness, just sadness that he was put down after a training accident in June. He won the Camperdown, Mildura and Swan Hill Cups.
Some of the other recipients of awards were:
VJA Outstanding Apprentice Award: Sebastian Murphy
ATA Trainer Of Apprentice Award: Darren Weir
Tommy Corrigan (Jumping) Medal: Steven Pateman
