Douglas Whyte went into last night's meeting at Happy Valley as favourite to win the jockey challenge. This, despite an unusually long stint at Happy Valley without a winner; his last win there being over a month ago. But last night he came back with a vengeance, winning the last three races including the feature race, The Hong Kong Football Club 125th Anniversary Cup. His first win came on Ho Ho Life in the Sha Tin Handicap; then in the next, feature race, he booted home Vitality Express, and in the last, the Kwai Chung Handicap, he succeeded on Upgrading to complete his treble and take out the jockey challenge.
.
This now puts Douglas seventeen wins ahead of Darren Beadman, and nineteen ahead of arch rival Brett Prebble in the current season's jockey premiership.
editor's note:
Vitality Express, a 5 year old Zabeel gelding, was a $A600,000 purchase a the 2007 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. He is a close relation to outstanding sire, Archway (IRE). Vitality Express had an uneventful career in New Zealand (racing as Va Benissimo). Transferred to Australia under the care of Joseph Pride he won a Wyong Maiden by 3 lengths (1600 metres) at his 7th start. Six months later Vitality Express had his first start in Hong Kong and has since gone from success to success.
