And now there is every reason for Epsom Derby winner Workforce to now be quoted as favourite for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
The Aidan O’Brien trained favourite - Jan Vermeer - finished a not disgraced, but nonetheless well-beaten 4th. His stablemate pacemaker, At First Sight, made at mockery of his 100/1 quote when he gave those in close contention the slip and established a 10 length break at Tattenham Hill.
The Sir Michael Stoute trained son of King’s Best - brilliantly piloted by Ryan Moore - was the only real challenge to emerge from the pack. So quickly did he gather in the breakaway leader that he had the lead at the furlong and then careered away on autopilot to record a record-breaking 7 length win.
Shades of Shergar.
Workforce ran the 1 mile 4 furlongs and 10 yards in a track record 2 minutes 31.33 seconds - smashing the previous record of 2 minutes 32.31 seconds set by Lammtarra in the 1995 Derby.
