Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. My passion for the theatre of the racetrack saw me leave school at fifteen and spend early mornings immersed in the sweat, smells, and sting of preparing horses for racing. Later I would come to research bloodlines and work in the multi-million dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. Horse racing has many facets. It does not sit in isolation in the world. It is something we should explore in detail and in depth. For more than ten years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

World's Leading Horses: did they get the rankings right?

November 8th 2008 07:19
The rankings for the World's Leading Horses (1st May 2008 to 4th November 2008) have been released with Curlin heading the list once again - as he heads now into retirement.

Zarkava: where does she rank?
Zarkava: where does she rank?

A remarkable effort by Curlin to consistently lead this list over the past 12 months with challengers coming - and retreating. In fact his two serious challengers - Duke Of Marmalade and Big Brown - slipped below their peaks and they too will finish their racing careers this year. Curlin remained dominant and supreme - both consistent and worthy of his number one position. His win in the Group 1 Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs in June the performance to keep him atop the list.

This top ten is full of horses moving into retirement - so next year will see an influx (by necessity) of many new names.

One of the beauties of racehorse racing is the ability to admire horses over successive years. But after looking aghast at the list of disappearing champions I have the feeling of disappointment and loss.

Finishing in (equal) second position was Raven's Pass who continued to gain momentum throughout the season, and rose from unlisted at the beginning of the year. He would then spend some time entrenched within the top 20 for several months before making a dramatic leap to 4th - and then to (equal) 2nd - this judged on his end of season win in the Group 1 Breeders' Cup Classic victory at Santa Anita. It has just been announced that he too will be retired to stud next season.

Also in equal second position was New Approach who had a great season which culminated in his victory in the Group 1 Emirates Airline Champion Stakes at Newmarket in late October.

At equal 4th is Duke Of Marmalade - who spent much of the year in second position and with the ranking as best turf horse in the world. His peak race was from midyear and his victory in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot (beating home fellow top 10 horses in Papal Bull and Youmzain). His form did taper away at the end of the season.

But if ever there was a travesty - an incorrect assessment - it would be the season ending (end of career) position of Zarkava in equal 4th. She won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in devastating fashion and was unbeaten (and seldom threatened) throughout her illustrious career. It is obvious that the Breeders' Cup Classic - with the appearance of Curlin - has elevated the station and standing of Raven's Pass. But in my opinion Zarkava ends the year level with Curlin - and she is the best horse in the world on turf.

The highest ranked Australian racehorse is still Weekend Hussler - although he has now slipped to equal 22nd position. At least he will race on for next year (and hopefully more). In the future he will be raced within his distance capabilities. I have no doubt that under those circumstances he will return into a top 10 position.

The official rankings are thus:

1 (130) Curlin
2 (129) Raven's Pass
2 (129) New Approach
4 (127) Duke Of Marmalade
4 (127) Zarkava
6 (126) Big Brown
6 (126) Montmartre
6 (126) Papal Bull
9 (125) Youmzain
9 (125) Henrythenavigator
9 (125) Conduit
9 (125) Goldikova

My rankings would be:

1 (130) Curlin
1 (130) Zarkava
3 (129) Raven's Pass
4 (128) Henrythenavigator
4 (128) New Approach
4 (128) Duke Of Marmalade
7 (126) Big Brown
7 (126) Montmartre
9 (125) Conduit
9 (125) Youmzain
9 (125) Goldikova
