Latest world rankings: Curlin still number one
July 8th 2008 05:50
The latest world rankings for racehorses (period January 1 to June 30) has just been announced, with US 4 year old Curlin retaining his top position.
The rankings are based upon the ratings of the panel of handicappers and racing secretaries affiliated with the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities. The list of top 10 ratings/rankings are as follows:
Curlin 130 (USA)
Big Brown (USA)
New Approach 126 (IRE)
Duke Of Marmalade 125 (IRE)
Tartan Bearer 125 (GB)
Henrythenavigator 124 (IRE)
Youmzain 124 (GB)
Zarkava 124 (FR)
Sacred Kingdom 123 (HK)
Soldier Of Fortune 123 (IRE)
Curlin remains the benchmark after returning from success in the Dubai World Cup to easily win the Stephen Foster Handicap (both Group One events).
Big Brown and New Approach: these 3 year olds from different continents have both achieved much this year, with both being the centre of some controversy in their countries of origin. No doubt if Big Brown had achieved the Triple Crown he would have been a close 2nd behind Curlin.
Duke Of Marmalade is trained by Aidan O’Brien and earned this ranking on the merit of his three Group One wins in a row.
Tartan Bearer was only bad luck away from an even higher rating with a brave second to New Approach in the Epsom Derby and a luckless 3rd to Frozen Fire in the Irish Derby. Frozen Fire has been rated on 122 the same as Yeats.
Henrythenavigator is another O’Brien horse with a Group One hat trick in recent months, including both English and Irish 2,000 Guineas to his name, on both occasions defeating equal second ranked, New Approach. Perhaps this is a bit of an anomaly as Henrythenavigator may prove to be the best European Miler in recent times. But an Epsom Derby always adds bonus points (I suppose).
Zarkava is a brilliant French filly is early favourite for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and may just prove to be the filly of a decade. She may challenge for top position.
Weekend Hussler slips out of the top ten and comes in at equal 11th, but still remains the top rated Australian horse on 122 (equal to Yeats and Frozen Fire).
Haradasun and Apache Cat both rated 120 and fill equal 20th position along with Vodka, Heatseeker, Jay Peg and Kingsgate Native (among the list of 12 on this rating).
