Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. My passion for the theatre of the racetrack saw me leave school at fifteen and spend early mornings immersed in the sweat, smells, and sting of preparing horses for racing. Later I would come to research bloodlines and work in the multi-million dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. Horse racing has many facets. It does not sit in isolation in the world. It is something we should explore in detail and in depth. For more than ten years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

The latest World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings have been released, with champion Curlin still heading the list.

At number two - and best turf horse in the world - is Aidan O’Brien’s star Duke Of Marmalade. If the Duke does win the best race in the world - the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe - then it would be natural and obvious for him to assume the number one mantle.

Big Brown is now equal third (second best dirt horse in the world) but unlikely now to climb any higher.

There are three French based horses now in the top 10.

The first of these is the exciting colt Montmartre who holds this position on the merit of his scintillating win in the Group One Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp in June.

Equal with him are New Approach (Epsom Derby winner) and Papal Bull (winner of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes).

The big mover this time is French horse Tamayuz who came from nowhere in the earlier rankings this year to zoom into the top 10 (equal 8th) on the merit of his win in the Group One Prix du Fresnay-Le-Buffard- Jacques Le Marois at Deauville (1600m) on August the 17th.

Plotting the movement this year we find that Curlin has been number one for all of 2008. Duke Of Marmalade has moved from being ranked 23rd in May into 2nd in current standings. A true measure of his year (to date).

Big Brown has slipped one spot from his career high position of 2nd after completing two legs of the US Triple Crown.

Montmartre was another horse not on the radar until he exploded at Longchamp in June.

New Approach started in 14th position in May and did move into 2nd position for a time in June before holding onto his current 3rd position.

Papal Bull moved from 44th position in June into 3rd after his victory at Royal Ascot.

Henrythenavigator moved from 12th in May to a career high of 5th in June - before slipping slightly to his equal 8th position of today.

Youmzain has plotted an erratic course: from 4th at the beginning of 2008, then slipping down to 31st in May - before leaping to 6th in June and now stabilising in his current equal 8th position.

Zarkava is the interesting horse. A high of 5th after winning the Prix Diane, she has subsequently slipped to 6th - and now further to equal 8th in September. Yet she is favourite to win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Undefeated and simply brilliant - her position is a puzzle. Surely if she wins the Arc a true measure will then follow!

Slipping out of the top 10 is Aidan O’Brien’s Soldier Of Fortune (now equal 12th). And slipping to 14th is another Ballydoyle horse in Yeats, who shares this spot with champion Australian horse Weekend Hussler. Surely by the end of the Melbourne Spring Weekend Hussler will be back where he belongs - firmly in the top 10 racehorses of the world.
