Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

So Think You

July 1st 2011 04:57
The Michael Kent trained You Think So this weekend is looking to add a metropolitan win to his resume on the same weekend as So You Think seeks to add the G1 Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park (England) to his impressive list of feature race wins.

So You Think will against only 4 rivals - one a pacemaker - but his opposition includes racing royalty in the shape of Workforce (the 2010 Epsom Derby & Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe) and Snow Fairy (English & Irish Oaks).

At Moonee Valley on Saturday You Think So meets 5 rivals and is (like his anagram namesake) odds-on favourite to win.

You Think So is a son of Golan and impressed at his 2nd career start when he came from the tail of a 17 horse field at Flemington over 2000 metres to get within half a length of the Mark Kavanagh trained Midnight Martini. Three-quarters of a length behind You Think So was Ulundi - who validated the fine performances in this race when he came out and won by nearly 3 lengths at Flemington last Saturday.

And now I await the racetrack arrival of So Think You (must be inevitable).
