Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Zantelagh

April 5th 2010 05:18
Top trainer Mark Kavanagh had a race-to-race double on Saturday at Caulfield with his exciting 3 year old sprinter Definitely Ready easily accounting for a field of older sprinters once again - and just one race before his striking grey Zabeel filly, Zantelagh, was very impressive when finally stepping out beyond 1600 metres and easily winning the 1800 metre Bill Collins Handicap after racing wide for the entire trip.

By Zabeel out of the champion sprinting mare Dantelah (1999 VATC Oakleigh Plate - Group One) this promising filly has definitely thrown to the staying prowess of her sire and is most likely to be aimed at a Queensland Oaks mission this Winter.

Zantelagh is owned in part by Sir Patrick Hogan and will eventually return to Cambridge Stud - home of Zabeel - when her racing days are over. Her dam Dantelah was mated with Zabeel three times between 2002 and 2005 and produced winners Bryannbo’s Gift, Bromley, and Zantelagh. Dantelah has a 2 year old filly named Maldivius (by Stratum) - but tragically both Dantelah and her Keeper foal died in 2008.
