Everything she does is magic

Champion 4 year old US mare Zenyatta easily won the $US2 million Breeders’ Cup Ladies' Mile on the first day of the Breeders' Cup two-day program with a repeat of her typical barnstorming finish.

$2000000 1m 1f 8 ran.
Going: Fast Time: 1m 46.9s
1st: Zenyatta (USA) - Mike Smith - John Shirreffs 1/2 f
2nd: Cocoa Beach (CHI)- Ramon Dominguez - Saeed bin Suroor 7/1
3rd: Music Note (USA) - Javier Castellano - Saeed bin Suroor 9/1
It is interesting that the champion mares this year in the US and in Europe (the incomparable Zarkava) have been blessed with incredible finishing bursts.
Owner of Zenyatta is Jerry Moss, a co-founder of A & M Records (he is the ‘M’), who at one time had English supergroup Police on his label. Her name comes from the 1980 breakthrough (in the US) album for Police: “Zenyatta Mondatta”.
Jerry Moss has had great luck previously with another Police inspired name - when Giacomo (named after the son of Sting, leader singer of Police) won the 2005 Kentucky Derby as a longshot.
If it were me in this (winning) situation, every horse I owned would carry Police/Sting references as a name:
Russians Love Their Children Too - that sounds like a Derby winner!
or
Englishman In New York - guaranteed success in the US and Europe.
Everything She Does Is Magic - damn, maybe that should have been the name for this one!
Trainer John Shirreffs considers her the best filly he has ever had - and she is still improving. She was a late starter to the racetrack as she is big and awkward (she stands 17.1 hands) - and has (still) a poor disposition for starting gates and crowds. Zenyatta is undefeated after nine starts. She won her debut by 3 lengths at Hollywood Park in the Fall of 2007 and has gone from strength to strength since. She is typically slow from the gates (just as Zarkava was) and she just finds a momentum and gathers her rivals in at will in the latter stages of a race.
She's not the least bit intimidated and doesn't pay attention to anything around her,. She expects everybody to stop for her." - John Shirreffs, commenting upon her size and demeanour.
"She came in with the reputation of being able to outgallop anything at the farm so we always had a real good feeling about her. I've had horses that could really quicken, but not only does she quicken she lengthens her stride so she gets longer and lower." - John Shirreffs.
"I've never felt something like this. Those are the best fillies in the world right there. She's amazing." - Mike Smith, jockey, after winning at the Breeders’ Cup.
Zarkava and Zenyatta have amazing similarities with their incredible speed at the end of races - and unwillingness to be bothered in the early stages. They were both given names that begin at the end of the alphabet. Just a coincidence - a piece of serendipity.
But in one respect they will differ: Zenyatta (already a 4 year old mare - older than Zarkava) will race on for another year.
It is good to see champion racehorses race. If only we had the opportunity to see the clash of Zarkava and Zenyatta! If only.
