Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Zipping to a Turnbull Victory

October 5th 2010 04:48
Last Sunday, for the second year in a row, team Williams proved successful in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000 metres) at Flemington. In 2009 it was with their mighty grey champion Efficient, scoring a surprise win when trained by the then Williams nominated trainer in John Sadler. In 2010 it was another Williams’ warrior in 9 year old Danehill gelding Zipping (this year Robert Hickmott is the designated trainer for what we all call ‘Team Williams’ - the close combination and collaboration between owner Lloyd Williams and the racebook identified ‘official trainer’). Two starts earlier (in the Autumn) Zipping won the Group 1 Australian Cup at Flemington - over the same distance.

150 metres from the line and Zipping (blue with white cap) leads from Shoot Out (no.5) on his immediate outside. Widest runner is Typhoon Tracy who seems to be producing an irresistible finishing burst (although this is not to be). Immediately inside Zipping is Shocking. Following Zipping (black and yellow silks - with blinkers) is Metal Bender. To his inside is VRC Oaks winner Faint Perfume who would fade to finish 6th. Last horse in this photo (blue and black silks - blinkers) is the imported galloper Buccellati who would produce his best effort in 3 starts since arriving in Australia and finish 7th.

At the 100 metres Zipping still holds the same narrow advantage over Shoot Out - with Typhoon Tracy on their outside starting to noticeably fade. Shocking still improves along the inside - but would have preferred to have been in an outside position to close.

Right on the line Zipping, in a brave effort, is seen to prevail. Shoot Out could not pass him - but neither did he wilt. Shocking closed hard for 2nd placing and narrowly split Zipping & Shoot Out. Metal Bender was similarly very strong in the closing stages. Typhoon Tracy dropped off - but was not disgraced at her first attempt at 2000 metres. Her next target is the 2040 metres of the Cox Plate.

Zipping was ridden by Nick Hall who understands the gelding very well - putting him into clear running on straightening and allowing him to show his staying, and fighting qualities, as he held off some of the best horses in Australia.

Finishing 2nd was 2009 Melbourne Cup winner Shocking - recent winner of the Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes. In 3rd position was AJC Derby winner Shoot Out. - already the winner of two Group Races this Spring. In 4th position was Metal Bender - winner of the Group 1 Randwick and Rosehill Guineas - and a winner this Spring campaign of the Group 2 Warwick Stakes at Warwick Farm.

In 5th position was the Australian Racehorse of the Year 2009-2010, Typhoon Tracy, who loomed up with 200 metres to go before peaking on her run.

A stellar field and a pivotal race for the Melbourne Spring Carnival.
